        1. SOFT990 overview
        -------------------

SOFT990 helps you to command a YAESU transceiver FT-990 or
     FT-890/FT-900/FT-840/FT-920/FT-1000MP/FT-1000D with a personal
     computer.

Below are some of the features of SOFT990 :

        - large display of the transmit and receive frequency
        - digital s-meter with memory
        - signal vs time analysis
        - easy and quick operation in split and qsx, reverse CW
        - dualwatch capability
        - quick memories
        - window for tnc operation (if connected)
        - graphic band scope to check activity on a band
        - channel information
        - automatic mode and filter switching
        - simulate two transceivers (like a quick memory for all para-
     meters)
        - functions in relation with a dx-cluster even if "DISCONNEC-
     TED" (SWL) and DXCC information
        - possibility to store the 90 (99/32) memories on hard disk
        - data base for BCL frequencies - scanning...
        - mini log-book function compatible with Log-EQF files

        2. System requirements
        ----------------------

        - "old" IBM PC or compatible (tested with 80286 and DOS 5.0)
        - EGA/VGA monitor 25*80 lines (text mode)
        - 1 serial port for radio interface
        - 1 serial port for Terminal Node Controller (optional)
        - CAT system interface (except FT-920 FT-1000MP)

        Note :

        - early FT-990 or FT-890 firmware (prior to rev. 1.3) does
not run with SOFT990 (except BCL module with limited functions :
select "0" as parameter for "transceiver" (SETUP)

        - the FT-1000 (to distinguish from the FT-1000D) does not run
with SOFT990 (except BCL module with limited functions : select
"0" as parameter for "transceiver" (SETUP)

        - the "0" selection for "yaesu transceiver" should run with
all Yaesu transceivers but with limited functions (BCL only),

        - with FT-840 the clarifier is not supported.

        - with FT-920 : BCL and BAND SCOPE are running only with VFO A
selected, scanning functions (keys 2,4,6,8) are not supported,
scanning function with +/- keys will mute the transceiver, REVER-
SE CW (CW LSB) can't be memorised in a Soft Quick Memory or in a
     file,

        - with FT-1000MP and FT-1000D : BCL and BAND SCOPE are running
with VFO A selected (the software equalize main and sub-receiver
before scanning to allow tuning around your current frequency
with sub-receiver), scanning by step of 10/100 hz with keys 4 & 6
     is not working,

        - COM3 or COM4 avalaible for selection with following restric-
tion : When COM3 (or COM4) is selected the software will swap
adress of COM3 (or COM4) with adress of COM1 (or COM2) ; selec-
tion of COM1 and COM3 (or COM2 and COM4) at once is not possible.
The initial setting of serial port is restored when ending the
program. This feature is absolutely not compatible with Windows
(exit Windows) and with some PC (for COM3 and/or COM4),

        - the bests results are with a old PC (which speed match the
slow rate of the FIF232 interface) and with very "basic" settings
     in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT.

        - if your interface or your transceiver is off the program
freezes : sorry for this drawback ; it would be actually delicate
to solve the problem while keeping a compatibility with all com-
     puters and interfaces..

        3. Installation
        ---------------

                            80286/12 and about 3500 for a P120)

SOFT990 doesn't run correctly from a DOS session of WINDOWS
95/NT then if WINDOWS 95 is in use create a shortcut to run
SOFT990.EXE in DOS real mode : with a rigth click select "proper-
ties" then "DOS MODE" in "advanced parameters" for "program"
(this shortcut is given in the zip file).

Disable any resident program as screen blanker...

To set the speed parameter you can run the software then run a
scanning with [+] or [-] ; increase the value until the TRX stops
scanning immediately after pressing a key. Also you can increase
the value if the software locks up.

        4. Operation
        ------------

IMPORTANT : Switch on your transceiver Yaesu and your TNC (if
used). Then if WINDOWS 95 is in use re-boot your PC into MS-DOS
real mode and run SOFT990 from the directory where SOFT990 is in-
     stalled (C:\SOFT990) as follow :

        C:\SOFT990> SOFT990 [path\logfile]

It is also possible to enter parameters in the shortcut pro-
perties and to make a double clic on SOFT990 or MS-DOS.

See 4.3 for the optional parameters [path\logfile]

        4.1 Normal operation (monitoring screen)
        ----------------------------------------

The communication between PC and TRX is relatively slow (4800
bauds) so there is a delay between "action" and "effect"

Operation is easy. The ten F-KEY (F1 to F10) are assigned to
     the following functions :

F1(HELP) : displays "help screen" (any key to quit)

        4.3 Log-book module
        -------------------

        4.3.1 Features
        --------------

SOFT990 is not a logging software ; the purpose of this func-
     tion is :

        - to add qso on a trafic-database
        - to view and edit the trafic-database

        Additional features are provided :

        - search for fields
        - "quick" print of the Log
        - text file export utility (CSV format)

These functions are limited : it is not possible to cancel a
qso prevously recorded but the soft read the Log-Eqf file format.
Log-Eqf is a shareware program copyrighted by N3EQF (download
at : http://www.itis.net/eqf). Log-Eqf is necessary to manage the
     trafic data-base (QSL DXCC...).

The software is able to write data's into a text file
     (Log.txt) using the CSV format.

The Logbook module is able to restore (from main module) :

                . Callsign (dx-spot)
                . DXCC info
                . Date
                . Time
                . Frequency
                . Mode
                . RS(T) from rx
. QSL manager (dx-spot if a "via" or "qsl" is present)
                . Info (dx-spot)

        4.3.2 Operation
        ---------------

To open the Log-book run SOFT990 as follow :

                . from DOS > SOFT990 [path\log file]

where path\log file is the path and the file name of the Log
     file.

The default are as follow :

        - current directory
        - SOFT990.LOG as Log file
        - .LOG as extension

        Example :

        C:\SOFT990 > SOFT990 C:\LOG-EQF\F6DEX.LOG

It is possible to call directly the logbook from DOS with the
same parameters : LOGBOOK [path\log file]

Note that the soft doesn't make any backup of your log file.
So it is usefull to make a backup in a batch file as follow :

        CD C:\SOFT990
        COPY C:\LOG-EQF\XXXXX.LOG XXXXX.BAK
        SOFT990 C:\LOG-EQF\XXXXX

where XXXXX.log is your log file.

When logging the soft stop communication betwwen PC and TRX
     except when you press F5.

Then when running SOFT990 it is possible to open the logbook
with the menu (F8) ,the shortcut Alt-L or the key Home.

        4.5 Band scope
        --------------

This function simulate a spectrum analyser. A graphic tuning
     is possible.

        Parameters :

CENTER FREQUENCY : center frequency in Mhz
HALF WIDTH : half width of spectrum in Khz
NOISE FLOOR : in s-unit ; this parameter is used
only for the "text mode" spectrum displayed when coming back to
     main program

ACCURACY : allows to set accuracy of spectrum
(1=low 8=high) - this parameter sets also the duration of spec-
trum analysis. When 0 is selected the software doesn't scan : the
spectrum depends only on the current frequency s-meter reading.

MODE/FILTER : the software select the appropriate
filter for scanning when A (AUTO) is selected. If the result is
not satisfactory it is possible to keep the current selection on
TRX with C (CURRENT) as parameter but in this case a fast AGC is
     necessary.

The duration of scan depends on band activity.

A graphic tuning is possible with help of the left and right
arrow keys. They allow to move the cursor : press any key to stop
and tune your transceiver on the new frequency ; press Esc to
     cancel the QSY.
